I wrote this novel (and the novels to come) not for shock value or to deplore readers. Anyone who knows me has heard my family stories and pride as a mother and wife. And my story as a woman is central to my identity. I created a character in my heroine, Renna, to exemplify the struggles it took to rise above the abuse and strife of the 18th century and offer a portal into the overall struggle in life for all women from any century or generation. The themes in The Curse of Maiden Scars are still very relevant today. I hope readers will keep with the tale, even if they cringe at the circumstances. Renna will prevail. Have hope in her resilience and determination. Receiving this award for contemporary, historical, and mystery/thriller fiction highlights the intent of this novel, and I'm very humbled by the recognition.
